Steatotic Liver Disease as A New Nomenclature for NAFLD from The Perspectives of The MENA Region: One Size Fits All This Time

We read with interest the recently issued multi-society endorsement of the new nomenclature of what was formerly known as fatty liver disease, introducing the new terminology steatotic liver disease (SLD) as an overarching term encompassing different causes of steatosis.

An essential criterion for a disease nomenclature to be widely and globally accepted is its generalizability and applicability in various geographical regions and its ability to consider and accommodate the heterogeneity among different social situations and stakeholders. In this letter, we aim to comment on the impact of the new nomenclature on managing the disease formerly known as NAFLD in our Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region.
